The application of sodium tripolyphosphate debinding agent can improve slurry properties, reduce moisture content, improve powder properties, reduce defects, increase the yield of high-quality finished products, reduce energy consumption, achieve energy conservation and emission reduction, promote cleaner production, and advance the sustainable development of the ceramic industry.


To avoid high slurry viscosity, high moisture content, high energy consumption, and low ball mill efficiency, the selection of desiccant will be more stringent. Sodium tripolyphosphate, also known as ceramic water-reducing agent or desiccant, has a significant desiccanting effect on ceramic slurries, especially ceramic glazes. If the production water contains a large amount of metal ions, it will also lead to high slurry viscosity even at normal addition levels. In actual production, if the deflocculant and its addition amount are not adjusted, the high slurry viscosity will result in low ball mill efficiency, slow ball output, or even no ball output, which can severely affect normal production. To ensure normal ball output and restore normal flow rate in the raw material workshop of ceramic enterprises, the normal viscosity of the slurry is generally maintained by increasing the amount of water content and deflocculant added.


Sodium tripolyphosphate can complex metal ions in water. Through cation exchange, more sodium ions surround the clay, while the displaced calcium and magnesium ions chelate with polyphosphate ions to form soluble complexes, compensating for steric hindrance. This results in higher fluidity and more uniform dispersion of the clay in less water. Therefore, sodium tripolyphosphate is also known as a ceramic water-reducing agent or a desizing agent.


Factors affecting the desizing effect of slurry in ceramic production include temperature, pH, clay properties, and cost. Sodium tripolyphosphate can usually be desizing in a neutral environment, exhibits high stability, and is inexpensive, thus it is widely used in ceramic production.
