The general public only understands the bright color of paint. Perhaps after using it, they realize that they want a paint with good surface gloss and smooth paint film. These two concepts will lead to a misunderstanding. Paint refers to whether the color is brighter or the gloss is brighter, that is, chroma and gloss.

Does sodium hexametaphosphate have connection  with the glossiness of paint?

The difference between chromaticity and glossiness.

Various objects selectively reflect and absorb the light projected on them. Different objects reflect, absorb and transmit light of different wavelengths to different degrees, and the reflection direction is also different, which results in different colors and glossiness of various objects.

Good gloss means that the pigment is well dispersed first, and there are still large pigment particles or pigment agglomeration in the coating system. When grinding solid pigments, adding sodium hexametaphosphate helps to crush the particles and prevent the broken particles from agglomerating to keep the dispersion stable. Oily liquids that are insoluble in water can be dispersed into very small liquid droplets under high shear stirring. After stopping stirring, they quickly separate under the action of

interfacial tension. However, after adding sodium hexametaphosphate dispersant and stirring, a stable emulsion can be formed. The main function of sodium hexametaphosphate is to reduce the interfacial tension between liquid-liquid and solid-liquid, so sodium hexametaphosphate is also a surfactant.

The chromaticity of paint is mainly reflected by hue, brightness and saturation. The most commonly used method is to add some surfactants or inorganic dispersants. Sodium hexametaphosphate has a good dispersing effect on pigments, which increases the surface energy of pigment particles and has a tendency to aggregate with each other.

When light shines on a material, specular reflection and diffuse reflection can occur. Diffuse reflection determines the chromaticity of the material surface, and specular reflection determines the glossiness of the material surface. In the dispersion system of the coating, the pigment is stabilized mainly through two mechanisms: charge stabilization and stereo protection. Since the aqueous solution of sodium hexametaphosphate is alkaline, it has a stronger dispersing effect on the dispersion medium. The brightness, light transmittance, mildew resistance, uniform dispersion, and adhesion of the pigment color can all be achieved by adding sodium hexametaphosphate.

Using different dispersants to enhance the gloss and increase the leveling effect will result in a significant difference in the gloss of the resulting paint film. Choosing sodium hexametaphosphate as a dispersant can prevent the color from becoming coarse after flocculation, and naturally will not affect the gloss.
