Sodium gluconate can significantly delay the initial and final setting time of concrete. When the dosage is below 0.15%, the logarithm of the initial setting time is directly proportional to the amount of mix, that is, the amount of mix is doubled. The initial setting time is delayed by 10 times, which extends the working time from a few hours to several days without compromising the strength. This is an important advantage, especially on hot days and when the time required to place is long. Applications are as follows:

1. By using sodium gluconate, the W/C ratio can be reduced, which can increase the strength of concrete, which is very important for high-strength reinforced concrete.

2. Large and heavy pouring projects are more difficult to construct. Due to the addition of sodium gluconate, the improvement of concrete operability and the delay of setting time can avoid the formation of joints in the structure, which can increase the strength of the structure.

3. It is important to keep the W/C ratio unchanged in hot areas to improve operability. A large amount of sodium gluconate was used to build bridges in the Middle East.

4. Adding sodium gluconate to concrete mixture can delay the setting time, which is very important for long-term and difficult pouring.

5. In the concrete industry today, premixed concrete is prepared in a central location and then transported out by mixer trucks. In this case, it is important to delay the initial setting time to increase operability.

6. Prefabricated masonry mortar must be usable for a long time. Adding sodium gluconate can extend the working period.

7. Oil well cement slurry is difficult to operate due to high temperature. After adding sodium gluconate, the concrete can work at 170℃ for several hours.

8. When the water to cement (W/C) ratio remains unchanged, adding sodium gluconate can improve plasticity. At this time, sodium gluconate acts as a plasticizer. When the amount of sodium gluconate added is less than 0.1%, the degree of improvement in operability is proportional to the amount added.

9. When the cement content remains unchanged and the content decreases (i.e. the W/C ratio decreases), when the amount of sodium gluconate added is 0.1%, the amount of water added can be reduced by about 10%.

10. Sodium gluconate as a cement reducer. In general, the following two aspects are very important for the performance of concrete: shrinkage and heat production.
